Dumfries and Galloway, South West of Scotland

The Moreig Hotel is within a short drive to the beautiful and lonely wilds of the Galloway hills and forests. This has long been a forgotten part of Scotland and is therefore relatively unspoilt with a wide variety of wildlife and spectacular landscape ranging from mountain and moorland, woodlands, forests, rivers and lochs.

Walking in Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway has the unique benefit of a range of magnificent hills, set around the vast Galloway Forest Park, the largest in Britain with 300 square miles of forest, mooorland, lochs and peaks. With rolling farmland and over 200 miles of coastline, the opportunities for healthy outdoor activities are limitless. Hill walking is superb with large areas of unspoilt areas of natural beauty. Ornithologists flock to the area to view the geese and other migrant birds during the winter and spring seasons. Trails have been developed by Forest Enterprise, for walkers and cyclists and unlimited coastal pathways complete the picture.

Fishing in Dumfries and Galloway

The rivers give access to salmon anglers in pursuit of their quarry, while trout and coarse fishers are provided with excellent sport in the burns and lochs which abound here. Sea fishing is available from both shore and boat. In season, deer stalking and rough shooting may be pursued. For others golf and mountain biking is a major feature of the sporting calendar.

Easily accessible from the central belt of Scotland, the North of England and Northern Ireland. In spite of its ease of access from these major areas of population Dumfries and Galloway does not suffer from over crowding. The pace of life is slower and the people are welcoming and helpful.
